KNOWLEDGE OF ESSENCES

essence, quiditas, abstraction, St. Thomas AquinasAbstract
The author confronts the rather extended belief that attributes to Aquinas and his school the theory of an immediate and complete knowledge of the essences of natural beings. Quoting the Angelic, he shows that, while there is such a knowledge, it is indirect and incomplete. They are known only insomuch as they are implied by accidents, which far from impeding their knowledge, show us their presence and allow us to slowly perceive their characteristics.References
