THE EXPANSION OF “LIFE”: ON MAX SCHELER’S POLITICS OF VALUES AND SUFFERING

Resumen
This article critically analyses Max Scheler’s conception of suffering and its relevance for his political texts. First, it traces the foundations of Scheler’s claim that all suffering has the meaning of sacrifice of “value-inferior” for “value-superior” in his axiological phenomenology of feelings based on a priori value-hierarchy. The article then analyses Scheler’s theory of intersubjectivity and situates his conception of suffering within it, paying particular attention to the role of the value-hierarchy in Scheler’s view of responsibility and solidarity. Further, the article examines the currently understudied political texts by Scheler, in which he explicitly justifies colonialism. In this regard, the article explores the relationship between Scheler’s axiological phenomenology and his colonialist politics, demonstrating that the race-based political commitments Scheler expresses in these texts are not incidental but structurally embedded in his philosophical system. Finally, the article considers Scheler’s post-WWI reflections on repentance, arguing that rather than marking a reassessment, they further reinforce the logic behind his philosophical system and its broader political implications.
